Conferences & workshops.(Calendar) - JOPERD--The Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance

April 2-5, 2003. First International Conference and Festival on Traditional Plays, Games, and Sports, Bangkok, Thailand. Hosted by the Chulalongkorn University School of Sport Science, this conference will bring together oral and poster presentations by distinguished scholars on the theme 'traditional plays, games, and sports: from localization to globalization.' The official conference language will be English. The festival on April 5 will consist of demonstrations of traditional plays, games, and sports. April 3, 2003. AAHPERD Writers' Workshop, Philadelphia, PA. This free workshop at the AAHPERD National Convention & Exposition aims to explain how to write acceptable articles for scholarly, blind-review journals. Dr. William F Stier, Jr. (professor and graduate director in physical education and sport at SUNY--Brockport) will begin the workshop with a brief overview of writing for journal publication. Then the audience, as individuals, will have the opportunity to meet in roundtable sessions with the editors of a variety of publications in the HPERD field, for the purpose of getting advice that will improve their manuscripts before submission. The following journals will be represented at the workshop: JOPERD, Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, Strategies, Measurement in Physical Education and Exercise Science, The Physical Educator, American Journal of Health Education, International Electronic Journal of Health Education, and the International Journal of Sport Management. The workshop will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at a location to be announced. Space is limited, and registration is required. April 6-8, 2003. Virginia AHPERD Annual Bike Walk Conference, Portsmouth, VA. The conference theme, 'Making Connections,' focuses on effective ways to connect people both physically and conceptually in the interest of promoting biking and walking. Speakers will address state and local issues and offer national perspectives on such topics as education and fitness, coalition building, planning, safety, and legislation. There will also be discussion on the reauthorization of the federal Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA21) which Congress will vote on in 2003. Registration for the event is $95. Cosponsored by the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Council on Exercise, this conference features programming aimed at exercise scientists, personal trainers, sports medicine physicians, and students in those fields. June 12, 2003. Activating the Brain Workshop, Toledo, OH. Sponsored by Midwest District AAHPERD, this workshop will feature presenters Susan Jones and Jean Blavdes, who will focus on strategies and techniques to increase achievement for all students by using physical education activities to stimulate neurological connections. June 19-21, 2003. National Coaching Conference, Penn State University, University Park, PA. 'Taking Coaching Education to Another Level: Giving Athletes the Edge' is the theme of this conference organized by NASPE's National Council for Accreditation of Coaching Education. Leaders from organizations at all levels of sport will share ideas for preparing and supporting coaches in all sports. Harry Sheehy, author and Williams University coach, will be the keynote speaker. Now in its 20th year, this symposium aims to bring the latest information to health professionals, performing arts educators, and anyone else involved in the well-being of performing artists. October 2-5, 2003. National Physical Education Teacher Education Conference, Baton Rouge, LA. Sponsored by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, this conference on the campus of Louisiana State University takes as its theme, 'Learning from the Past, Building for the Future,' It will highlight best practices in the preparation and continuing development of physical education professionals for K-12 schools. The conference will focus on topics of interest for college and university PETE faculty and administration, field experience supervisors, and LEA and state physical education supervisors. Topics in poster sessions and presentations will include the preparation of PETE professionals, curriculum reform, PETE standards, diversity, professional development schools, program assessment, research, and technology.
